On January 9, 2013, a SeaStreak commuter ferry traveling from Atlantic Highlands, NJ to Manhattan crashed while attempting to dock, causing many people on board to sustain injuries. Fourteen of these ferry passengers recently settled their claims against the company for a total of $6.5 million. The largest three individual settlements in the group were as follows: $5 million for a for a 39-year-old stockbroker who fractured his skull, jaw and face, was in a coma, and sustained a permanent brain injury; $560,000 to a 29-year-old claimant for back injuries requiring a lumbar fusion; and $325,000 to a 58-year-old man who sustained a neck injury that required a cervical fusion. The claims settled after pre-trial mediation with a former NJ Superior Court judge.
