A plaintiff who alleged a catastrophic reaction to an unnecessary medical test was recently awarded $3.62 million by an Essex County jury. The plaintiff presented at UMDNJ with symptoms including female bleeding and pain in her leg. Emergency physicians ordered a diagnostic CAT scan and plaintiff was administered a contrasting dye that allegedly caused her blood pressure to increase and rupture an aneurysm in her brain. As a result, plaintiff required emergency cranial surgery and now claims cognitive issues, partial paralysis and inability to return to work as a college instructor. The verdict was reached by the jury after a 12 day jury trial. The case reportedly settled shortly thereafter for less than the full amount of the verdict.
